Modernizing Architecture
The rise of modernism was due to the fact that everyone wanted to out do those before them but then they came up with architecture that was very simple. Architecture that had all of the elaborate detail stripped away but still had its underlying meaning behind it.
I think it was so important for people by the beginning of the 20th century to be working so hard to be modern because they were working to create something new without having all of that surface detail but still conveying a message through the architecture.
